The largest of our lampshades: a tall, seed-shaped form rising to a crown of three points around an open top. Gently waving bands are incised around the body, and between them the walls are cut through by hand with triangles, clusters of dots and small sunbursts, while a broad, smooth column runs uncut down one side.
The kiln fired the clay a soft silver-grey with a pewter sheen, warming to bronze on the crown and to smoky rust near the foot. Lit from within, light spills through the triangles and dots in a lattice of gold and rises from the open top.
Unglazed Bizen stoneware, wood-fired in one continuous firing near Bizen, Okayama (GPS 34.7456°N, 134.1894°E). Its colour and markings are kiln transformation (yōhen) — the record of earth and flame in a single moment, not a pattern anyone chose. One of a kind, shaped by human hands, and impossible to reproduce. Traceable to the kiln that made it.
